Designcenter: Advancing Product Design with AI and Digital Twin

Designcenter is a platform in Siemens’ product design and engineering portfolio. Building on the NX technology foundation, Siemens has developed Designcenter to expand connectivity across engineering processes.

The transition from the NX name to Designcenter is considered a step forward in Siemens’ strategy to unify its solution portfolio, with the goal of creating a more flexible and connected digital engineering environment.

1. Designcenter – Building on NX technology

NX is a CAD/CAM/CAE platform that has long been used across various industries, including precision engineering, automotive, aerospace, electronics, industrial manufacturing, and mold and die design.

In January 2025, Siemens introduced NX under the name Designcenter NX as part of its solution portfolio. In June 2026, Siemens officially renamed Designcenter NX to Designcenter, covering both on-premises and cloud-based SaaS solutions.

Existing customers do not need to switch to an entirely different software product. Designcenter continues to build on NX technology, design data, and workflows, while reflecting Siemens’ broader direction for product engineering.

  • CAD – Design: Create 3D models, design parts and assemblies, and produce engineering drawings.
  • CAM – Manufacturing: Support CNC programming and connect design data with manufacturing processes.
  • CAE – Simulation: Analyze, evaluate, and validate designs before actual production.
  • Digital Twin: Provide design data as a foundation for connecting with simulation and other engineering processes.
  • Collaborative Engineering: Support coordination and data exchange between engineering teams.

2. Why is NX transitioned to Designcenter?

The renaming is part of Siemens’ strategy to develop a unified product engineering solution portfolio, focusing on three main directions.

2.1. Unifying the Siemens Xcelerator Ecosystem

Designcenter is positioned alongside solution brands such as Teamcenter, Simcenter, and Opcenter, reflecting the connection between design, simulation, product lifecycle management, and manufacturing operations.

2.2. Expanding engineering capabilities

Rather than being associated with a single CAD application, the Designcenter name reflects a broader direction toward connecting multiple engineering disciplines, supporting businesses from design through validation and manufacturing preparation.

2.3. Flexible deployment and collaboration

Siemens offers Designcenter as an on-premises solution and Designcenter X under the SaaS model. Businesses can choose the deployment method that best suits their IT infrastructure, data management requirements, and operational policies.

3. Key technologies in Designcenter

3.1. AI – Intelligent Assistant for Engineers

Design Copilot NX is an AI assistant that uses natural language to help users search documentation, explore software functions, and access technical guidance directly within the working environment. The tool helps engineers find information and resolve issues when using the software without spending excessive time on manual searches.

3.2. Digital Twin – Connecting Design, Simulation, and Manufacturing

Design data from Designcenter can be connected with simulation, manufacturing, and product lifecycle management tools within the Siemens ecosystem.

This provides a foundation for businesses to build Digital Twins, evaluate engineering alternatives, and identify issues before actual product manufacturing. This helps minimize late-stage design changes and reduce the need for physical prototypes.

3.3. Cloud Engineering

Designcenter X provides SaaS-based design solutions with integrated data management and collaboration capabilities. The available packages offer different usage methods: Essentials supports browser-based work, while Standard, Advanced, and Premium primarily use desktop applications with supported web access capabilities.

3.4. Immersive Engineering – More Intuitive Design Experiences

Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies expand the ability to view, evaluate, and collaborate on 3D models. Engineers and stakeholders can review designs in a more intuitive environment, supporting structural assessment, layout evaluation, and discussion of design alternatives before production.

3.5. Value-Based Licensing

Value-Based Licensing uses a token-based mechanism to access supported add-on modules. Tokens are consumed when a function is activated and returned to the shared pool when the working session ends.

This mechanism helps businesses allocate software access flexibly across engineering teams, particularly when specialized tools are needed only occasionally, thereby optimizing investment costs.

4. What Value Does Designcenter Bring to Manufacturing Businesses?

By connecting design tools and engineering processes, Designcenter helps businesses improve product development efficiency:

  • Shorter development cycles: Strengthen connections between design, simulation, and manufacturing.
  • Improved design quality: Support design validation and earlier identification of technical issues.
  • Optimized machining processes: Connect design data with CAM programming and manufacturing preparation.
  • Enhanced collaboration: Improve data exchange between engineering teams and relevant departments.
  • Flexible investment costs: Choose deployment methods and expand capabilities according to usage needs.

Designcenter is suitable for businesses in precision engineering, automotive, aerospace, electronics, mold and die design, and industrial manufacturing – industries with high requirements for accuracy and product development efficiency.
